Former federal
minister for science and technology Prof Attaur Rahman will open four-day
Global Biotechnology Congress 2016 in Boston, USA, today (Monday).
An official of the
International Center for Chemical and Biological Sciences (ICCBS), University
of Karachi, said on Sunday that this conference provides a platform for
researchers and decision makers to present latest findings and learn about
developments in biotechnology.
Many Nobel laureates
and experts will participate in the conference which is fourth in the series,
he added.
The conference will
cover transnational nature of biotechnological research, with emphasis on both
basic science and its applications in industry and academia. Throughout the
course of the conference, scientists will have the opportunity to both network
and hear leaders from the international academic and corporate biotechnology
communities.
Prof Attaur Rahman,
PhD in organic chemistry from Cambridge University (1968), has 1021
publications in several fields of organic chemistry, including 728 research
publications, 37 international patents, 68 chapters in books and, 188 books
published largely by major US and European presses.
He is editor-in-chief
of eight European chemistry journals and editor of the world’s leading
encyclopedic series of volumes on natural products “Studies in Natural Product
Chemistry”. Its 47 volumes have been published under his editorship during the
last two decades. Some 82 students have completed their PhD degrees under his
supervision.
Prof Rahman is said to be the most decorated
scientist of Pakistan, having won four civil awards Tamgha-i-Imtiaz,
Sitara-i-Imtiaz, Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Nishan-i-Imtiaz.
